The assessment of legal awareness is not only based on crime rates and violations, but also involves indicators that measure the extent to which people in an area are aware of the law. These indicators aim to assess knowledge, understanding, compliance, and respect for existing legal provisions. Soerjono Soekanto in his theory that the indicator of legal awareness is a relatively concrete guide about the level of awareness (Soekanto, 1982: 152), according to Soerjono Soekanto there are 4 indicators of legal awareness, namely:

A person has an understanding that there are various behaviors that have been regulated by law, both written and unwritten law. These legal rules include prohibited behaviors, such as criminal acts, as well as permitted behaviors, such as activities that are recognized and protected by law. This awareness shows that individuals understand the importance of legal regulations in regulating social interactions and maintaining order in society.

A member of the community has knowledge and understanding of certain rules, such as Law No. 1 of 1974 concerning Marriage. This understanding includes the nature of the law, its importance in regulating marital relations, as well as the rights and obligations of the couple. With this understanding, the community can better appreciate and implement norms in family life.

A person tends to make certain judgments about the law based on their personal views and perspectives. This tendency can be influenced by various factors, such as cultural background, personal experience, and the values they hold. Thus, judgments about the law are not always objective, but are often influenced by individual interpretations that may differ from others.

Where a person or in a society its citizens comply with applicable regulations.

Based on the explanation regarding the lack of legal awareness, efforts to increase legal awareness in Indonesia must involve a comprehensive and sustainable approach. One important step is to improve legal education from an early age in schools, so that the younger generation can understand their rights and obligations more deeply.

In addition, there needs to be a broader and more effective legal socialization program, which reaches all levels of society, including through easily accessible information media. The government and legal institutions must also work together to simplify the legal process, so that the public feels more comfortable and confident to participate in the judicial system. By increasing understanding, compliance, and respect for the law, it is hoped that crime rates can decrease, and people can live in a safer and more orderly environment. Through collaborative and directed efforts, legal awareness in Indonesia can be significantly increased, bringing positive impacts to justice and social stability.

The low level of legal awareness in Indonesia is a serious challenge that affects social stability and law enforcement. Although there has been progress in recent years, such as an increase in the number of Law-Aware Villages/Sub-districts, much remains to be done to improve public understanding and compliance with the law. Factors such as lack of legal education, weak socialization, and the complexity of the legal system contribute to this low awareness.

Therefore, more intensive and coordinated efforts between the government, legal institutions, and the community are needed to address this problem. Improving legal education from an early age, effective socialization programs, and simplifying the legal process will be very helpful. With these steps, it is hoped that legal awareness in Indonesia can increase, bringing positive impacts to justice and social order. Building a law-aware society is an important investment for a safer and more civilized future.
