Legal Literacy - Learn the essence of impeachment, its objects and reasons, and the impeachment mechanism in Indonesia. Discover the fundamental differences between impeachment and dismissal in the context of removing the President/Vice President.

Impeachment, in general understanding, refers to the downfall, resignation, or dismissal of a President or high-ranking official from office. However, the essence of impeachment actually focuses more on accusations or indictments, so this process does not always result in the end of the term of a President or high-ranking state official.

The importance of understanding impeachment includes three main aspects, namely: the object of impeachment, the reasons for impeachment, and the impeachment mechanism. Each country has different regulations regarding these three aspects, which are regulated according to its constitution. However, what is no less interesting to explain is that impeachment and dismissal are essentially two things that have different essences.

Object of Impeachment

The object of impeachment is not limited to state leaders such as the President or Prime Minister, but also includes other high-ranking officials, including judges or chairpersons as well as members of state institutions. Although the object of impeachment varies between countries, public attention is usually more focused on state leaders. In Indonesia, with the adoption of the Amendment UUD 1945, the impeachment mechanism only applies to the President and/or Vice President.
